"Paper", new works by Michael Gentry, will be on view at
Gallery Up December 12–January 30, 2009.

The opening artist reception will be on January 22, 2009 from 6
pm to 9 pm.

In his newest series Gentry, a senior
sculpture major at Winthrop University, explores the subtle yet intriguing
characteristics of paper, producing work which not only uses paper as a
substrate but as a medium in and of itself. The series explores composition as
numerical systems or crystallographic balance and examines process as a simple
repetitive action.

Debut of New Work
“The repetitive process of tearing and layering paper, combined with repetitive
quality of the finished product, creates a unique, alluringly tactile experience
for the viewer, ” explains Gallery Up Director Stephanie Jordan.

“Gentry’s consideration of his materials and craft, along with his
attention to detail, contribute to a very sophisticated body of work. The pieces
possess a subtle beauty all their own and we are so pleased that this new work
will be making it’s debut in our gallery.”Works of Paper will open in
conjunction with the reception for Winthrop University fine arts professor Paul
Martyka’s new collages at the Center of the Arts. Select artist studios at both
the Gettys Art Center and Center for the Arts will also be open to the public
that evening. Visit www.galleryup.com for details on the show and information on
upcomingevents.
