Arts vs Politics

This story is about how Art is creating a big stir in California Politics. This is very recent, it was published at 3:45 today, in the LA times...right as we were getting OUT of art class. The story is basically how politics are fighting over whether art even needs to be kept in schools. The current gov., Arnold Schwarzenegger, however vetoed the school district idea to 'dilute the art programs' throughout the school. It was a pretty interesting article because art awareness and support groups started popping up everywhere. I found it very interesting that a school district would want to do this..and their rationale? To ease drop out rates... it was then clearly described in the article as a 'misguided attempt'. Anywho...here's the link if you want to read more :)

  1. That was one of the best posts I've read on this blog. Impressive find, Elizabeth.

The underlying issue comes up a great deal at the local level too, esp. in recent months. As you would probably guess, I'm a big fan of the arts. This has just as much to do with holistic learning as it does with keeping students in schools. The fine arts can be a way of providing a safe-haven for those who are on the fence about whether to go to school. I could go on and on......, but nice post.
