When you are the author or the sole creator you automatically have rights to what you create.  There is no need for a copyright symbol in many cases.

 However, sometimes you want others to use your stuff.  Creative Commons is an organization and website dedicated to allowing creators the ability to set the level of ownership. which is free in most cases.
