Under Destruction
Playing on the pervasiveness of images of distruction and devastation in the news and in the hollywood movies, artists are making works that range from violent to chillingly disquieting. On a hot afternoon in December 2011, artist Cai Guo-Qiang set off a series of explosions in the desert outside of Doha, Qatar. Plumes of black smoke made patterns against the stark blue sky, and a rainbow appeared over the landscape.
