Andrew Wyeth Dies at 91

Andrew Wyeth died yesterday at the age of 91. He was an American realist painter who is most known for painting Christina's World, a tempera painting with with a young paralyzed woman in a field who seemingly desires the home on the high horizon.

I was first amazed by this artist after seeing this mentioned piece at the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in NYC. I became enthralled, however, when I saw The Helga Series at the Mint Museum in Charlotte several years back. Here, I was captivated by his series of paintings of a female neighbor that was held secret to only the artist and the model for decades. Each blade of grass or each strand of hair has its own brushstroke. The detail could intimidate even the most accomplished realists-- amazing.
