Gustav Klimt (1862 - 1918) was known for his use of gold leaf in his work. This is not surprising as he was the son of a gold engraver. His most famous piece, "The Kiss," is an Art Nouveau piece that takes advantage of extensive use of pattern.
This particular piece is also known for the symbolic representation of two figures embraced in to one shape. He also creates a captivating push/pull relationship with the patterns pushing the viewer away while the soft shading of the figures pull the viewer in.
